I took delivery of my Gordon Smith guitar a few weeks ago. I decided to leave it a few weeks before writing a review so that I could spend time with the guitar and get to know it well.

I specified a custom GSG2 guitar which is based on an SG. I particularly wanted a guitar with a 24 inch scale length as I have small hands. This was no problem. Throughout I dealt with Doug who was extremely helpful. I already had an initial idea of what I wanted. Doug helped me arrive at the final specification. Throughout the process he made suggestions; after all he would be making the guitar and knows ‘what will work and what will not’. For instance I had specified a rosewood fingerboard. Doug suggested an ebony fingerboard as the reds in rosewood would not go so well with the finish I wanted. This is the attention to detail that made the final product a stunning guitar.

The guitar arrived well packaged in a quality hard case. As they say, “first impressions are important”. When I opened the case I was amazed at what I saw. To look at it was fabulous; just what I wanted and more. It looked just right. I took it out of the case and played it without an amp first. It felt and played perfectly. Inspecting the guitar I was very impressed with the quality of craftsmanship. For instance, the neck join; this was invisible, the neck flowing into the body with no visible join. All other details looked just right. And it has the trade mark brass nut.

I then played the guitar through a (valve) amp. Played clean it has a great range of voices with all combinations of pickup and tone control. Particularly impressive is the single coil sound, enabled by the push/pull coil tap on the volume controls. Giving it some overdrive, and further, it sounded awesome! Again just as I was hoping. The guitar was well set up with a great action and Intonation is really good.

The options for each aspect of the guitar are numerous, so you can have virtually any shape, finish, hardware configuration etc that you could wish for. Thank you so much to Doug and the team at Gordon Smith Guitars for enabling a great specification and crafting such a lovely custom guitar. I thoroughly recommend Gordon Smith Guitars.

    Thanks, again guys, Julian
